Crab Keeper is a free web app for people who crab in the United States. It shows the slack-water window for your bay, harvest rules by state, public spots and bait shops, and a catch log that works at the dock with no signal.
Crab Keeper shows the slack-water window for the bay you pick: the hour either side of slack, when current is weakest. High slack eats better. Where the bay has a NOAA current station, the app uses its predicted slack; where it does not, it estimates slack from the tide turnaround and marks that slack with a tilde. The Today card reads GO NOW or GO AT a clock time; the Week of tides lists High slack and Low slack. Predictions are estimates.
Parts of it do. The app shell and map areas you have viewed are kept on the phone, so a bay you looked at still draws with no bars. Double-tap or long-press the map to stash a hole. Works with no signal. When the dock has no bars, logs stay on this phone until you have signal; the header reads Signal or No bars. Photos do not queue. Tides, closures, and spot details need signal.
The Licenses panel has all 50 states, grouped Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf, and No marine crab season for inland states. Each coastal state shows bag, size, sex, and season copied from that state’s fishery agency, the date retrieved, and a Buy a license link. The bay picker and map cover the lower-48 crab coasts across 22 states. Alaska and Hawaii are in Licenses only. Not a live legal feed; open the agency page before you set gear.
No. Size is a gauge, not a photo. Measure it. Size and sex are that state’s rule. The app will not tell you a crab is legal from a photo; there is no green keeper light. A pin shows its daily limit. Biotoxin and emergency closures override the copied rules. European green crab do not go back. Rules change; the app is your crabbing buddy, not your lawyer.
Free. Map, tides, spots, shops, harvest guides, and the catch log are included. There is no in-app purchase in this version and no checkout. Pro (offline bay packs, the aerial overlay, and camera Identify on the phone app, which is switched off) is invite-only; email support@crabkeeper.com from your account. Bait-shop listings are independent; a paid listing says Sponsored. The live app today is the website; Google Play and the App Store are not shipping yet.
